Former PGA Tour star Anthony Kim has revealed how a random social media rumor sparked his unexpected return to professional golf after a 12-year absence. The three-time PGA Tour winner, who recently joined LIV Golf, had barely touched a golf club during his hiatus while battling addiction, depression, and anxiety.

Kim explained that both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf League expressed interest in signing him in early 2024. However, the catalyst for his comeback was an unexpected tweet falsely claiming he had signed with LIV Golf for "a ridiculous amount of money."

"I didn't even have Twitter, somebody sent me a picture of the tweet," Kim said during an interview with Rick Shiels. "Then I got a call from some guys from the PGA Tour who said 'is this true? Did you already sign?' At the time, I was like 'I don't even have golf clothes and people are asking if I've just signed for $100 million.'"

This social media speculation led to serious discussions with both tours. After getting sober and considering his role as a father, Kim eventually signed with LIV Golf just before their Jeddah event in March 2024. Despite finishing 53rd out of 54 players in his debut, Kim has shown steady improvement and earned nearly $1 million in prize money.

"I have no idea who this guy is [who posted the tweet], but I owe him at least dinner!" Kim said, acknowledging the strange circumstances that led to his professional comeback.

Kim has promised to share more details about his 12-year absence when the time is right, focusing now on continuing his recovery and being a positive role model for his young daughter.
