Clever Local Rule Ruling Helps Scheffler Stay in Contention at Torrey Pines
Scottie Scheffler cleverly used Local Rule F-23 twice during Round 2 at Torrey Pines' South Course, turning a potentially disastrous situation into a routine par.
At the par-3 11th hole, Scheffler's tee shot bounced off multiple cart paths, leaving his ball 257 yards from the tee in thick rough. The World No. 1 noticed a Genesis Invitational sign near the 12th tee box was affecting his stance and invoked the Local Rule for Temporary Immovable Obstructions (TIO).
This rule allows players to take relief without penalty when a temporary structure interferes with their stance or line of sight. Scheffler's first drop improved his lie to the collar of the tee box. Still finding interference, he took a second drop, landing on a flat portion of the 12th tee box.

From the improved position, Scheffler hit his approach to three feet and made the par putt. He went on to shoot a 67, adding three birdies and an eagle to finish one stroke behind leader Davis Thompson heading into Saturday's third round.
The incident showcases how thorough knowledge of golf rules can help players avoid costly mistakes and maintain momentum during crucial tournament rounds.
