Ernie Els has responded to Rory McIlroy's recent comments about never playing on the PGA Tour Champions, suggesting the Northern Irishman might change his mind as he approaches 50.

McIlroy, 35, recently stated at The Players Championship: "I will not play Champions Tour golf. Something has went terribly wrong if I have to compete at golf at 50."

Els, now 55 and a seven-time PGA Tour Champions winner, shared his perspective on X: "At 35 years old I was also bullet proof saying things about not playing past 50. I'm 55 now and laughing at my comments from back then."

McIlroy elaborated on his stance, expressing his desire to retire while still competitive: "I'd like to walk away maybe a little before I should. I don't want to be out there embarrassing myself."

Els, fresh off his 2024 Senior Players Championship victory, defended the Champions Tour: "Champions Tour golf is so fulfilling with a great bunch of players we all grew up together from junior golf. Our sponsors and partners are wonderful companies and people. Competition is a powerful tool!"

McIlroy has previously acknowledged being "probably on the back nine" of his career following Team Europe's 2023 Ryder Cup victory. While he maintains his position on early retirement, Els suggests that perspective might shift considerably over the next 15 years.
