Day, who claimed victory at the 2016 Players Championship with a four-shot margin, had been showing promising form heading into this year's tournament. His recent performances included a T3 finish at the American Express and T8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational just last week at Bay Hill.
The 37-year-old Australian's career peaked in 2015-16 when he won eight tournaments, including the PGA Championship and The Players. During this period, he achieved five consecutive Major top-10 finishes and held the World No.1 position for 51 weeks.
Danny Walker will replace Day in the field at TPC Sawgrass for this year's Players Championship, often referred to as golf's unofficial fifth Major.
This withdrawal continues a pattern of health-related challenges for Day, who has faced various physical setbacks throughout his career despite his impressive achievements, including his Major victory and multiple PGA Tour wins.
