Gary Player Reveals Simple Bunker Raking Technique That Could Change Course Etiquette
Golf legend Gary Player recently demonstrated a better way to rake bunkers, addressing a common etiquette issue that affects playability. While filming with YouTube star Grant Horvat, Player noticed problematic grooves in a fairway bunker created by traditional raking methods.
Rather than using the conventional technique of raking with tines down (sometimes called the "Aussie method"), Player demonstrates a simple solution: flip the rake over and use the smooth side to brush the sand instead of combing it. This creates a more even surface without deep grooves that can affect ball lie and shot execution.

Five Common Bunker Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid:
- Entering from the high side
- Always enter from the low side
- Follow the same path in and out
- Prevents damage to bunker edges
- Not bringing the rake
- Take the rake with you initially
- Prevents extra trips across the sand
- Maintains bunker condition
- Improper raking technique
- Rake backwards to cover your footprints
- Use back-and-forth motions
- For deep marks, use the rake's flat side first
- Incorrect rake placement
- Follow course-specific guidelines
- Place parallel to play direction
- Position to minimize interference with play
- Not cleaning shoes after
- Tap shoes with club to remove sand
- Prevents tracking onto greens
- Shows consideration for other players
These proper bunker maintenance practices help maintain course conditions and show respect for fellow golfers.
