Hand Injury Forces World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler Out of American Express Event
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has withdrawn from the upcoming American Express tournament to continue rehabilitation of a hand injury sustained during Christmas dinner preparations.
The injury, a puncture wound from broken glass in his right palm, required surgery to remove glass fragments. According to his manager Blake Smith, the expected recovery time is three to four weeks.
This marks Scheffler's second consecutive tournament withdrawal, following his absence from the season-opening Sentry, which Hideki Matsuyama won.

"After consulting with my medical team, I have decided to withdraw from next week's American Express tournament to give my injury more time to heal," Scheffler announced on Instagram. "I am still hopeful to begin my 2025 season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am."
Scheffler aims to make his season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, scheduled for January 30-February 2. The tournament, where he finished tied for sixth last season, will be the second signature event of the 2025 schedule.
The delay in his return comes after an outstanding previous season, during which Scheffler:
- Won seven PGA Tour events
- Secured nine worldwide victories
- Won the Masters
- Earned an Olympic gold medal
- Joined Tiger Woods as the only player to win PGA Tour Player of the Year three consecutive times
- Finished second to Woods in the PGA Tour's Player Impact Program
