Hideki Matsuyama's Flying Driver Scare at Sony Open as Club Slips During Tee Shot
During the first round of the Sony Open, Hideki Matsuyama experienced a concerning moment when his driver slipped from his grip during a tee shot on the ninth hole. The club flew toward spectators but fortunately hit the safety rope without causing any injuries.

Despite this mishap, Matsuyama recovered well on the 517-yard Par 5. After his off-line tee shot near the boundary fence, he managed to reach just short of the green with his second shot. He completed the hole with a birdie, contributing to his three-under-par 67 for the round.
The incident didn't significantly impact his performance, as Matsuyama finished the day tied for 26th, three shots behind leaders Denny McCarthy, Harry Hall, Eric Cole, Adam Schenk, Tom Hoge, and Paul Peterson.
Matsuyama, who entered the tournament following a victory at the Sentry, is scheduled to continue his second round at 12:50 p.m. ET, playing alongside Russell Henley (four under) and Sahith Theegala (three under).
