During the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, J.J. Spaun benefited from a unique rules situation while in contention. On the par-5 ninth hole, Spaun's second shot found the rough in a difficult lie.

The situation unfolded when Spaun's foot was positioned on a sprinkler head, qualifying for relief under Rule 16 (Abnormal Course Conditions). After taking his initial drop, Spaun was able to drop again when his ball landed near another sprinkler head, ultimately allowing him to play from the fairway.

NBC on-course reporter Jim 'Bones' Mackay explained: "J.J's ball was in a horrible lie. He was standing on a sprinkler, but nowhere near the fairway. He took relief and within that clubhead was another sprinkler. He intentionally dropped it into that sprinkler and got a second club-length away from that and got himself into the fairway."

The fortunate sequence of events led to a birdie for Spaun, pulling him even with Rory McIlroy. While some golf fans questioned the ruling on social media, it's important to note that Spaun's actions were entirely within the rules of golf.

Play was later suspended due to lightning threats in the area, with McIlroy leading at 12-under-par following a birdie at the 11th hole.
