Golf legend Lee Trevino shared candid insights about the current state of professional golf and the PGA Tour-LIV Golf divide during a Golf Channel interview at The Players Championship.

Trevino praised PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan's leadership through recent challenges, stating, "What he's gone through these last two years is unbelievable." He expressed confidence in Monahan's resilience, noting, "If I need somebody to go in the foxhole with me, I'm going to take Monahan with me."

On the current state of golf, Trevino highlighted several positive developments:

  • Increased attendance
  • Higher ratings
  • Improved pace of play
  • Enhanced TV coverage showing more action

Regarding LIV Golf's future, Trevino was direct: "I think it's dead. I think the other side is gone."

He also reflected on golf's previous major split in 1968, when the Tournament Players Division separated from the PGA of America, eventually becoming the modern PGA Tour. Trevino expressed relief that this earlier division was ultimately resolved.

The six-time major winner suggested further improvements could come from faster decision-making between players and caddies, though he cautioned against implementing strict timing rules.
