The 2021 Masters champion fired a final-round 65 (-8), highlighted by a hole-out eagle on the third hole and his 20th consecutive birdie on the fifth. Despite a brief setback with a bogey before the turn, Matsuyama responded with four birdies in five holes to take command of the tournament.
The Japanese star sealed his record-breaking performance with crucial birdies on the 16th and 18th holes, surpassing Cameron Smith's previous record by one shot. This victory marks Matsuyama's 11th PGA Tour title and his third in the past 12 months.
Collin Morikawa finished second after posting a 67 (-6) in the final round. Sungjae Im claimed third place at 29-under, while Jhonattan Vegas took fourth. Ludvig Aberg, Thomas Detry, and Corey Conners shared fifth place at 24-under-par.
Speaking through a translator, Matsuyama expressed his satisfaction with the victory: "I knew Collin was going to play good today, so I was going to say, hey, I'm going to shoot 10-under today, and that's the attitude I had today. That last putt, it felt like if I make it, then it's going to be the record, so I'm so happy that it went in."
The victory serves as an impressive start to 2025 for Matsuyama, who credited a productive off-season for his stellar performance at the tournament.
