Graeme McDowell expresses optimism about ongoing discussions between the PGA Tour and Saudi PIF to reunite professional golf, highlighting the importance of bringing the world's best players together more frequently.

"I'm really excited that things are going on to try and repair the damage that's been done and bring the best players in the world back together more often," McDowell told BBC Sport Northern Ireland. "That's the key really, for the fans, for sponsors and for TV."

The talks appear to have gained momentum with US President Donald Trump's involvement, while both LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil and PGA Tour player director Adam Scott have expressed hope for a swift resolution.

McDowell, who has competed on LIV Golf since 2022, is particularly focused on qualifying for The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in July. The 2010 US Open champion hasn't played in a major since 2020 due to his move to LIV Golf and subsequent loss of world ranking points.

"With the Open being at Portrush this year, it cranks up the intensity a little bit higher for me," McDowell said. "I'm looking all over the world to see where there might be an opportunity and trying to go that extra mile to try and get into that tournament."

His first opportunity to qualify for The Open will come at the Asian Tour's International Series Macau event in March, where three qualifying spots are available for top finishers not already exempt.
