Rafael Campos will miss his first Puerto Rico Open since its inception in 2008, but for a remarkable reason - he received a coveted sponsor exemption to the Arnold Palmer Invitational, one of the PGA Tour's prestigious Signature Events.

The opportunity came through a phone call from tournament director Drew Donovan, bringing Campos to tears. The event features a $20 million purse and guarantees FedEx Cup points with no 36-hole cut, marking only his second Signature Event appearance.

"I started kind of crying because it means a lot to us, the Puerto Ricans, just being able to go and play in a bigger event," said Campos, who won the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last year. "It really motivates the younger generations back home."

The timing is particularly significant as Campos, the only PGA Tour member from Puerto Rico, has been struggling with his game. Despite winning in Bermuda last November, he has missed nine cuts in his last 11 PGA Tour starts. Recently, he began working with Boyd Summerhays, making significant changes to his grip and swing mechanics.

Campos has written approximately 150 letters to tournament directors seeking sponsor exemptions throughout his career, making this invitation particularly special. When sharing the news with his wife, she initially feared he was injured when he said he couldn't play in Puerto Rico, only to be relieved and excited about the Arnold Palmer opportunity.

"That's a blessing," Campos reflected. "It's an opportunity we'll always remember. I really want to take advantage of it and hopefully it's the start of me gaining the confidence I need to start playing some good golf."
