Rory McIlroy shot his best round of the tournament at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, carding a three-under-par 69 despite damaging his lob wedge before the third round. The defending champion discovered a significant score mark on his wedge face while practicing bunker shots, caused by hitting a stone.

Fortunately, McIlroy had a spare wedge in his locker to replace the damaged club. His current wedge setup includes TaylorMade MG4s (46°, 50°, 54°) and a Titleist Vokey Design WedgeWorks (58°).

Despite the significant deficit, McIlroy remains optimistic about his chances for a third straight Desert Classic victory. He noted that a score of around 63 in the final round could put him in contention, particularly if he can make early progress on the front nine.

"If the conditions are right, I've been able to do that before," McIlroy stated, emphasizing the importance of a strong start in the final round. "If I can get off to a faster start and shoot three or four under on the front, then I have a chance."
