Rory McIlroy: TGL's Biggest Challenge Is Actually The Sand In The Bunkers

The biggest technical challenge facing TGL is the bunker conditions, according to Rory McIlroy. During matches, the sand in the bunkers dries out as humidity drops in the arena, making shots feel like hitting through flour rather than sand since they can only water it before play begins.

McIlroy addressed initial concerns about the simulator technology's accuracy by testing it against GC Quad and TrackMan launch monitors, finding the numbers "virtually identical" across all systems.

The main adjustment for players is hitting into a screen rather than at physical targets. McIlroy explains that pros need to trust the technology will properly read shot shapes and ball flight:

"You have to really try to treat this as if you're playing outside because if you hit it on that right half of the screen and try to hit a draw, like it will come back. If you hit a fade on the left side of the screen, it will come back."

While the Full Swing simulator and green complex have faced some criticism, with players struggling to control putting speeds, McIlroy believes these issues will resolve as players get more familiar with the setup. He noted that each week has shown improvement, with Monday night's match being "the best one so far."

As a startup in its fourth week, TGL continues to refine its product through real-time learning and adjustment. McIlroy's Boston Common Golf team returns to action next Tuesday against Los Angeles Golf Club as the league works to establish its identity and overcome these early technical challenges.
