Padraig Harrington revealed that Rory McIlroy's dominant performance at the 2011 U.S. Open dramatically impacted his career mindset and confidence. As a three-time major champion, Harrington entered Congressional believing he was the best player in the world.

McIlroy, then just 21 years old, shattered records with a 16-under-par performance and the lowest 72-hole score (268) in U.S. Open history.

"Where I was broken, Rory broke me in 2011," Harrington explained on the Cookie Jar Golf Podcast. "I go into this tournament and Rory does something that I can't compete with. Wipes the floor. This is me at my best and I don't think I can compete with him."

The impact was significant. Before 2011, Harrington focused solely on his own game. After McIlroy's win, he constantly doubted his abilities, thinking "I'm not good enough."

This shift in mentality affected Harrington's major championship performances. While he managed top-10 finishes in the 2012 Masters and U.S. Open, he wouldn't achieve another major top-10 until the 2021 PGA Championship.

McIlroy went on to win three more majors by 2014 but hasn't captured another since, creating an 11-year major championship drought that continues today.
