Rory McIlroy's Hard Stance on Champions Tour Draws Response from Golf Veterans
Padraig Harrington has offered a thoughtful response to Rory McIlroy's recent comments about never playing on the Champions Tour. While McIlroy stated he would "absolutely not" play Champions Tour golf and that "something has went terribly wrong" if he's competing at 50, Harrington sees things differently.
"Look, they're words," Harrington said. "You say words and they're picked over and pulled apart."

Harrington, a three-time major winner, highlighted several benefits of the Champions Tour:
- Excellent golf courses with premier presentation
- Opportunities to hit meaningful shots under pressure
- Chance to validate and relive past victories
- Enjoyable lifestyle that most golfers dream about
"I've never been happier than out here playing on the Champions tour," Harrington explained. "Literally every week I'm living a life that people would save the whole year to have this one week."
While understanding McIlroy's perspective, Harrington suggests the younger player's views might evolve with time. "Things will change. And I'm not saying everybody changes, but it's likely that things will change and he'll actually come out, have a bit of fun."
Four-time major winner Ernie Els also weighed in on social media, noting that he once thought he was "bullet proof" before recognizing the tour's advantages.
The debate highlights a broader discussion about career longevity in professional golf and how perspectives can shift as players age and their competitive priorities evolve.
