Tour Championship Format Changes Being Considered, Spieth Reveals
Jordan Spieth has indicated potential changes to the Tour Championship format following discussions at a recent PGA Tour policy board meeting. While no longer serving as a player director, Spieth shared insights about ongoing format considerations.
The current system, implemented in 2019, assigns starting strokes to players based on their FedEx Cup standings positions. This format has faced criticism, including from 2024 FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler, who called it "silly" and questioned its ability to reflect season-long performance.

"Everything is pretty much on the table," Spieth said, suggesting potential changes could include head-to-head matches or reducing the number of players competing on Sunday. The initial format change aimed to avoid crowning two different champions at the event's conclusion.

Among the alternatives being considered:
- A match play-style format
- A Wednesday-to-Saturday tournament with triple FedEx Cup points
- A Sunday strokeplay shootout featuring the top eight players
Spieth, recently returning from wrist surgery, is now focusing on his game preparation. After finishing T69 at Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T4 at the WM Phoenix Open, and missing the cut at Genesis Invitational, he aims to compete on challenging courses leading up to the Masters.
"My goal now is to play difficult golf courses and work my way into contention as we look towards Augusta," Spieth stated, highlighting his preparation strategy for the upcoming major championship.
