The Genesis Invitational stands out among PGA Tour Signature Events as one of just three tournaments to feature a cut. Unlike most Signature Events, which operate with no-cut formats, this tournament maintains this traditional aspect of professional golf.

The cut rule at the Genesis Invitational is straightforward:

  • Takes place after 36 holes
  • Top 50 players and ties advance to the weekend
  • Players within 10 strokes of the lead also qualify
  • From the 72-player field, typically around 50-55 players make it through

Tournament host Tiger Woods has been a strong advocate for maintaining the cut, stating in 2023, "I certainly am pushing for my event to have a cut." This position aligns with the other player-hosted events - the Memorial Tournament and Arnold Palmer Invitational - which also maintain cuts.

The debate over cuts in professional golf continues, with TV networks and sponsors preferring no-cut events to guarantee star player appearances throughout the weekend. As Rory McIlroy noted, "They want to see the stars at the weekend. They want a guarantee that the stars are there."

Last year's tournament saw 51 players make it through to the weekend, with 17 players missing the cut. Notable events included Jordan Spieth's disqualification after an opening 66, and Tiger Woods' withdrawal due to illness during the second round.

The preservation of the cut at the Genesis Invitational helps maintain golf's traditional competitive element while balancing modern tournament demands.
