Hunter Mahan believes the PGA Tour should make it easier for top college golfers to transition directly to the main tour, rather than requiring most to first compete on developmental tours like the Korn Ferry Tour.

Currently, only one college golfer per season can earn direct PGA Tour access through the PGA Tour University rankings system. The next four receive Korn Ferry Tour cards, while players ranked 6-10 get conditional Korn Ferry Tour status.

Mahan argues this restrictive system:

  • Halts positive momentum of promising young talent
  • Makes it harder to market and build storylines around emerging stars
  • Contrasts with other sports like NFL that promote top college talent directly
  • Misses opportunities to engage fans with fresh faces and stories

The six-time PGA Tour winner points to recent successes of young players like Luke Clanton, Nick Dunlap, and Ludvig Aberg as evidence that many college stars are ready to compete at the highest level immediately.

While LIV Golf offers an alternative pathway for college players, Mahan notes most still prefer the PGA Tour route due to:

  • Stronger competitive fields
  • Access to major championships
  • Greater long-term career opportunities

Mahan suggests using college golf as a "pseudo Korn Ferry Tour" to identify and fast-track elite young talent, creating a more seamless transition between college and professional golf.
