Joel Dahmen: Finding Balance Between Netflix Fame and PGA Tour Success
Joel Dahmen's rise to fame through Netflix's "Full Swing" docuseries brought both opportunities and challenges to the PGA Tour player. While the exposure increased his profile significantly, it also created difficulties in managing his time and responsibilities, especially coinciding with becoming a new father.
Dahmen experienced a performance dip following the show's release, nearly losing his PGA Tour status before securing it with a crucial final-round 64 at the RSM Classic. Speaking on GOLF's Subpar podcast, he acknowledged struggling to balance the influx of new opportunities during the first year after Netflix.
To address these challenges, Dahmen:
- Hired sports psychologist Chris Bertram
- Learned to be more selective with opportunities
- Developed better time management skills
- Focused on maintaining his competitive edge
"Saying no is a powerful thing. I'm in a position now where I can say no. And that is a really cool thing," Dahmen explained. He now prioritizes commitments that align with his passion and partnerships, helping him maintain a better balance between his professional obligations and performance on the course.
The experience taught Dahmen valuable lessons about managing sudden fame while maintaining his professional golf career, ultimately leading to a more sustainable approach to handling opportunities and commitments.
