Lee Trevino: Players Championship Has Earned Status As Fifth Major Championship
Lee Trevino, six-time Major champion, strongly advocates for the Players Championship to become golf's fifth Major championship. His endorsement stems from the tournament's prestigious status, world-class field, and iconic venue at TPC Sawgrass.
"Yes, and there's no question in my mind about it," Trevino stated during a Golf Channel appearance. "The field, the golf course, look at it, 100,000 people, why not? It's unbelievable."

After nearly 50 years of history, the tournament has established itself as the PGA Tour's flagship event, often referred to as the "unofficial fifth Major." Trevino emphasizes three key factors supporting its potential Major status:
- Course Quality: TPC Sawgrass maintains exceptional standards
- Field Strength: Consistently attracts the world's top players
- Tournament Prestige: Extensive history and massive spectator attendance

Speaking to SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, Trevino added: "I think that it's qualified now... I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be another Major championship. It'll give Jack a little bit more, Tiger a few more and me one more!"
The discussion about elevating The Players to Major status continues to be a significant talking point in professional golf, with Trevino's endorsement adding considerable weight to the debate.
