Denny McCarthy, one of the PGA Tour's top putters, made a significant equipment change at the 2024 Sony Open that immediately impacted his performance. After struggling at the Sentry tournament, McCarthy completely revamped his putting setup with a new Scotty Cameron putter, featuring a new insert, grip, and modified length.

The changes proved successful in Round 1 at Waialae Country Club, where McCarthy sank over 145 feet of putts en route to a bogey-free, six-under 64. This performance placed him in a six-way tie for the lead alongside Harry Hall, Eric Cole, Adam Schenk, Tom Hoge, and Paul Peterson.

"I've just kind of been struggling looking down at my putter," McCarthy explained. "It hasn't felt right lately. After last week, I determined I wanted to change this week, just something different to look at, and I really liked how this one felt."

The equipment change came after McCarthy's impressive 2023 season, where he ranked fourth in Strokes Gained: Putting, fourth in putts per round, and seventh in one-putt percentage.

McCarthy's next round begins at 6:10 p.m. ET, where he'll play alongside Charley Hoffman and Alex Smalley.
