Fred Couples has adopted an unconventional bag setup featuring six woods - a strategy that caught Tiger Woods' attention during the PNC Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando.

Couples' unique configuration includes a driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, and three rescue clubs (4, 5, and 6), replacing traditional irons to help manage his ongoing back issues.

"I seem to hurt myself on most 4-, 5-, and 6-irons because you're still going at it really, really hard," Couples explained. "I just tried these [rescue clubs], and I absolutely love them."

The adjustment came after Couples struggled at the Masters due to back pain. "My back is shot," he said at Augusta. "If I'd have had more woods, honestly, I probably could have shot 75... I should have had 11-wood to hit 140 yards. I couldn't even hit an 8-iron."

The setup has proven successful, with Couples noting improved performance. "I'm a better 5- and 6-iron player with these than I ever was." He added that he wishes he had made the switch earlier in his career.

Tiger Woods' reaction to the unusual setup was both amused and skeptical. Upon counting the woods in Couples' bag, Woods simply remarked "Oh, you have six? Seriously." When Couples demonstrated a shot equivalent to a 5-iron, Woods jokingly questioned, "Is that an 8- or a 5-iron?"

The modified club selection has garnered attention from other golfers, with Couples mentioning increased interest in similar setups among players. "They're very easy to hit," he explained, highlighting the practical benefits of his adaptation to physical limitations.
