The South Course underwent significant changes in 2001, including:
- Course lengthening
- New bunker additions
- Green reshaping
- Renovations by architect Rees Jones
These modifications helped Torrey Pines secure the 2008 U.S. Open, which Tiger Woods went on to win. The South Course will host the 2025 Genesis Invitational, becoming the 12th venue in the tournament's history since 1926.
