Despite an early bogey on the first hole, McIlroy responded with four consecutive birdies between holes two and five. He faced challenges in the middle of his round with two bogeys but regained control with a crucial wedge shot on the 16th hole.

The victory puts McIlroy alongside Seve Ballesteros for European Tour Order of Merit titles, now trailing only Colin Montgomerie's record of eight. He also equals Jon Rahm's record for most season-ending championships.

Final Leaderboard:

  • Rory McIlroy (-15)
  • Rasmus Hojgaard (-13)
  • Adam Scott (-11)
  • Shane Lowry (-11)
  • Antoine Rozner (-11)
  • Tyrrell Hatton (-10)

In an emotional post-victory interview, McIlroy reflected: "It means a lot. I've been through a lot this year, professionally, personally, and it feels like the fitting end to 2024. I've persevered this year a lot. Had close calls. Wasn't able to get it done. So to be able to get over the line... I'm really pleased with the way I finished."

The tournament's conclusion was particularly dramatic, with McIlroy securing victory by making a final birdie on the 18th hole, while Hojgaard settled for second place. The win marks another significant milestone in McIlroy's illustrious career and further cements his legacy in European golf.

The victory was made even more special as McIlroy celebrated with his family on the 18th green, providing a touching end to what he described as a challenging year both on and off the course.
