Six-Time PGA Tour Winner Hunter Mahan Has No Plans For Competitive Return: 'The Price Is Too High'
Former PGA Tour pro Hunter Mahan has firmly ruled out a return to professional golf, embracing his new role as a high school golf coach in Texas. After accumulating six PGA Tour wins, three Ryder Cup appearances, and over $30m in prize money, Mahan retired at age 39 to focus on family life and teaching.
"Having to travel and do all the other things that if you want to be a professional golfer you have to do, I do not miss any of that," Mahan told Golf Monthly. "I do like waking up in the same place every day and being with my kids and wife."

With four young children, Mahan acknowledges the significant commitment required for professional golf. "I'm not willing to pay that price," he states, noting the challenge of "climbing the mountain twice" while balancing family life.

Currently coaching at Liberty Christian in Argyle, Texas, Mahan finds fulfillment in developing young talent. "It's challenging to create a culture in high school... to get these kids excited about golf and to take a kid who might have shot in the 90s and is getting better and better," he explains.

While he maintains eligibility for the PGA Tour Champions when he turns 50, Mahan remains focused on his coaching career and family life. He occasionally provides commentary for events like the Ryder Cup and on SiriusXM, enjoying the game from a different perspective without the pressures of competition.
