As a UAE golden passport holder and Dubai property owner, Otaegui will now represent the UAE in all professional golf tours worldwide. The 32-year-old's primary motivation is to win an Olympic medal for his adopted country.

"The UAE is my home, I love its culture and its innovative spirit," Otaegui told the Emirates Golf Federation. "My goal is to represent the UAE globally and bring home an Olympic medal."

Beyond personal achievements, Otaegui aims to serve as a role model for young Emirati golfers and contribute to the sport's development in the UAE. He has already been working as an ambassador for the Emirates Golf Federation and the UAE national golf team.

Emirates Golf Federation Vice Chairman, General Abdullah Alhashmi, welcomed the decision, stating it will help elevate UAE golf to higher levels internationally. He praised Otaegui's integrity both on and off the course as an ideal example for national players.

Otaegui's professional achievements include:

  • Five DP World Tour victories
  • Record-setting win at the 2022 Andalucia Masters (19-under at Valderrama)
  • Most recent victory at the 2023 Volvo China Open
  • 13th place finish at the 2023 DP World Tour Championship in Dubai

This nationality switch means Otaegui will no longer be eligible for Team Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup.
